STROKE

WHAT IS A STROKE? When the blood supply to the brain is disturbed in some way and brain cells are starved of oxygen causing some cells to die and leaving other cells damaged or dead it's call a STROKE.

Most strokes happen when a blood clot blocks one of the arteries (blood vessels) that carries blood to the brain. Brain cells are starved of oxygen causing some cells to die and leaving other cells damaged when the blood supply to the brain was disturbed in some way. This type of stroke is called an inschaemic stroke.

STROKE- Transient ischaemic attack (TIA) is a short-term stroke that lasts for less than 24 hours. The oxygen supply to the brain is restored quickly, and symptoms of the stroke disappear completely. A transient stroke needs prompt medical attention as it is a warning of serious risk of a major stroke.

What are the effects of a stroke?

People can be affected in quite different ways. This partly depends on which area of the brain is damaged from STROKE, because different parts control different abilities such as speaking, memory, swallowing and moving. The most common signs of a stroke are weakness, paralysis or numbness of the arm and leg. Sometimes the people who have had stroke may be difficult to speak or understand.

What are the risk factors?

Age over than 40 should have an annual blood pressure check to maintain the high blood pressure.
Smokers have double the risk of stroke as non-smokers.
The people who have Diabetes.
Too much alcohol increases the risk of a stroke.

Problem :

Dato’ Thong was admitted into the private hospital on 22/8/99, due to a severe stroke on his right side of his brain affecting the left side of his body. The hospital operated the right side of his when it became swollen and suffered from concussion for one month. He had 0% hand movement and his leg could move a little. But he could not walk. He also complained that he could not sleep at night. Besides having a stroke he also suffered from diabetes.

The first Laboratory test done on 22/8/99 indicated that the readings for his liver function and enzyme, renal function, bone metabolism, diabetes test etc were shockingly bad. The laboratory report also indicated that he was in his final stage of his life and would die soon. His potassium reading of 2.7 mmol/L was much low than normal. His Glucose reading was higher than normal, 8.9 mmol/L.

The second Laboratory tests on 15/9/99, showed that his condition did not improve. All the doctors in the private hospital could not do much for him. His liver function and enzyme for direct bilirubin reading of 9.7 umol/L was higher than the previous result, and for the indirect bilirubin the value of 60.3 g/L was much lower than normal. The result for diabetes with values of 7.3mmol/L showed an improvement but had yet to reach the normal level.

His family could not see any improvement when he was in the private hospital. He was literally like a vegetable on the bed. His family members were terribly worried for him. They made a decision to discharge him from the hospital and seek other alternative treatment for him.
